The Power of Goal Setting in Addiction Treatment: Evidence and Practice

A study published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment reports that goal setting is an effective tool for promoting positive outcomes in addiction treatment (Lundahl, Moleni, Burke, Butters, Tollefson, & Butler, 2013). The study found that goal setting was associated with improved treatment engagement and retention, as well as reduced substance use.

Another study published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology found that goal setting was effective in promoting abstinence from alcohol and drugs among individuals in recovery (Marlatt, Baer, Donovan, & Kivlahan, 1988). The study found that individuals who set goals related to abstinence were more likely to achieve and maintain sobriety than those who did not set such goals.

At The Recovery Center USA, we are proud to incorporate goal setting as a key component of our comprehensive treatment program. We believe that setting realistic and achievable goals is a powerful tool for promoting positive outcomes in addiction recovery.

Through goal setting, our clients are able to build self-confidence, develop a sense of purpose and direction, and celebrate progress along the way. Our experienced treatment team works with each client to identify their unique needs, strengths, and challenges, and to develop personalized goals that are tailored to their specific situation.
